The picturesque, medieval village of Désaignes is situated at an elevation of 520 m. Désaignes is a ‘village de caractère’ giving it a protected status. The heart of the village is the castle, serving as a regional museum. It is open to the public in the summer. The village has a bakery, a butcher, a small supermarket, a post office, town hall with tourist information, hotels, a restaurant, a café, bar/tabac and a garage with a petrol station.
Désaignes borders the banks of the Doux river. In summer, the river is dammed up in various spots resulting in a plan d’eau: a natural area where people can swim. The plan d’eau of Désaignes is located within walking distance from the holiday cottage. There are picnic areas with facilities for children surrounded by shady trees. In July and August a lifeguard is on duty in the afternoons.
At a distance of 6 km from Désaignes you will find the town of Lamastre, which has a regional appeal. In Lamastre an open market is held twice a week. It boasts many facilities, such as a large supermarket, a great variety of shops, hotels, restaurants, pizzerias and sport facilities. Moreover, the town offers medical facilities: general practitioners, veterinarians and pharmacies. Near campsite Le Retourtour the river Le Doux is also damned up resulting in a natural swimming place (‘plan d’eau’) with a picknick area.
